2019. Thank me. I thank me for i have successfully made me me. This year I have successfully built a brand; my brand. I have, in this very year managed to turn myself into a man. A man propelled by the desire to turn sleepless nights and long hours of hard work into smiles from satisfied customers.  Efforts to becoming a man I am today. This very year, I focused on building my brand in the digital marketing business, with focus on websites, social media marketing and management plus identity branding for various companies and organizations.

I remember sitting outside Airtel shop eating my plate full of rice and contemplating my firing and possible bankruptcy in 2018. As I ate my rice enjoying the tastes of the carefully cooked rice with chambo, my mind couldn’t stop thinking what was I going to do next? What was going to become of me? Will I go back to writing and polishing my cv and wait for another job opportunity? Or whom do I have in my circle to offer me something? Ladies and gentlemen, that’s where my gratitude story begun. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I, I took the one less traveled. And that made the difference.” W.B. Yeats wrote in his masterpiece “The Road Not Taken.” This is my story.

Passion. Determination. Desire. Or let me say, the fear of what will become of me got me deep in thoughts. Then boom!

I remembered my passion. My determination to make a name. Grow a brand out of me and make a mark in my generation. I remembered JP Morgan, Henry Ford, and Andrew Carnegie. Men who out of sheer determination built brands and made a mark. So I thought why not my name “Joshua Mwendo” what if it was a business? And what if it actually translate into its monetary value and add bucks to my account? Dare. I dared myself. Not doubting an ounce and each passing second the determination grew even stronger. I was a man thirst. Thirst to make a statement to his generation. A man determined to leave a lasting mark just like the Henry Ford’s of the olden days. Joshua Mwendo.

So the journey begun. I brought my iPhone to purpose and I had my genius friend on the other side of the line. I explained what I wanted and told him to develop a brand out of my name and that will be the genesis of my business. I was specific that this brand should generate and translate into monetary value for me. My good friend Mr. Mbeza set out for the job which I paid for with my last money and he delivered a superb logo and identity for me. The dream had set off and there was no turning back.

At the onset, I started with facebook management. Asking companies if they would be interested in having social media pages. I approached a big number but they wouldn’t give me business until one came through and that was it. One daring company on one end and one passion driven Joshua Mwendo on the other.

Along the way I made collaborations with fellow young men in the industry and got to do websites. I hunted for the clients and my friend developed them. Slowly I thought to myself I needed to learn how to develop on my own. One easy enrollment at a training institution, which if course was recommended by a friend, for web development course. By the end of that course I was able to code a basic website and I could understand what goes into website development. With time and practice I got better and understood more and more. I can now develop and build websites. From an economist and psychologist lol. Interesting huh??

To cut it short, the business has grown. We have developed a lot of websites. Been able to buy laptops to use. Acquire office space and a home for ourselves. We can afford good food at the same time we are still pushing for our dream. Able to fly out and just spend a weekend outside the country was only a dream. But it’s been possible because we believed and God did the rest.

I am happy and grateful for 2019 because I have partly achieved what I wanted. Not all, but most. I have met a lot of challenges but they can not be compared to the victories I have achieved. I believe in myself more and I know I can do better. I am still growing my brand and offering more to my clients. I have a goal to be the best digital marketing consultancy in the country. Websites, Social Media Pages, Identity Branding and content creation. These are just a few of the services I am offering to my clients. And All this in just a year.

While I can complain about the bad times. I choose not to simply because; “Better to lose count while naming your blessings than to lose your blessings to counting your troubles”

So 2019 has been a blessing and am grateful for that. A social Scientist turned Web developer. Joshua Mwendo.

The journey is not for the swift nor the fastest, but time and chance happen to us all. In equal measure too. So I soldier on. And I remain one till the war is won…
